Case study
Capacity Building for Health Improvement
Working alongside McKinsey we developed an organisational reform programme that better equipped NHS staff to design and execute smoking cessation programmes.
A series of filmed in-situ observations and interviews were carried out to explore issues such as ‘the smoking journey’ – the specific moments in people lives when they are most likely to start smoking, quit or relapse. By understanding these issues the NHS team could support their patients more effectively.
They were also able to use the films and practice sessions to train their peers ensuring a lasting benefit across the organisation.
“We are very excited with the quality of the materials now feel confident delivering it on our own. The practice and constructive feedback really helped”
Outputs
- A patient segmentation that described the range of behaviours and attitudes held by smokers.
- Clear and practical guidelines on how to improve service design based on the perception of interventions from health professionals.
- Improved quality of referrals between disciplines through a better understanding of patient need.
“In the future, I won’t ignore the fact that a patient smokes and I will start speaking to them to find out if they want to stop, without preaching […] I am now confident I can inform them of the possibilities and help available.”
Training and capacity building:
- Motivational interviewing techniques developed and practiced.
- Inter-disciplinary teams working together to design and test services and tools.
“I did enjoy the stop smoking training day. It was a relaxed atmosphere and very proactive as well. It’s also nice to see the faces of the stop smoking specialists that we usually refer to…”
